Strange and Silly Holidays

I don’t know about you, but when the December holidays come to an end, I’m always looking forward to the next holiday or observance.  To me, holidays aren’t just about having the day off, they are meant to honor a person or memorializing an event that made a difference in our lives, country, and for mankind.  They should be days of serious reflection and remembrance. We had MLK day on the 18th of January.  The third Monday in February is President’s Day.

Years ago, we had a few in-between random non-holidays like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day.  I heard someone once say certain “observances” during the year were created to benefit greeting card and candy companies. FYI, my favorite cards are humorous, and my favorite candy is chocolate.

Times have changed. There are many more light-hearted days in between these holidays that are really more observances than remembrances. To most, they are silly and random days for celebrating something more obscure. That’s okay. We all need a laugh.

There is a “Something on a Stick Day” is (March 28th).  “Gummi Worm Day” is (July 15th).  There are even days to show your pet some love with “Hug Your Hound Day” (September 14th) and Hug Your Cat Day (June 4th). Personally, I am looking forward to “Clean Up Your Room Day.”  It’s my birthday that day. And, just for fun, I may just leave my room dirty that day. I didn’t see a “Don’t Keep Your Room Clean Day.”

After writing this blog, I think we need a “National Put Words in Quotes Day.” Whether you like “Dance Like a Chicken Day” or “International Talk Like a Pirate Day”, take a moment to “Tell a Joke Day” or “Eat Moldy Cheese Day.” Entertain yourself. Laugh a little. I know I do.
